The High Seas

Ships & the Shipyard

Seven hulls, from a two-gun Small Boat to the Britannian Man-o'-War and the Fishing Trawler. Every ship is built by a carpenter, rolled once for life, and fitted out at the Shipyard in your yard.

The hulls

Before her timber and her rolls. Hull is what sinks her; sails are her canvas, a second bar that slows her as it is shot away. Speed is cells a second at Full Ahead, turn is degrees a second with the helm hard over. A Shipyard holds up to 6 ships.

Building one

Built at the Carpentry crafting window, or the Carpentry tab of your house's Crafting Bench, behind a progress bar. The price is in plain Wood Planks and Iron Ingots — the rarer the timber you build her in, the fewer of them she takes (next table).

Her timber and fittings

One Material choice picks both: a hull of each timber is fitted in the metal of the same rung. The timber adds hull; the fittings turn a share of every hit aside. Carpentry needed is the hull's own or the timber's, whichever is higher.

🧮
For example, a Britannian Man-o'-War is 50,000 planks and 20,000 ingots in plain Wood and Iron, 10,000 and 4,000 in Valiwood and Valorite, and 5,000 and 2,000 in Blackwood and Blackrock.
🎲
Every ship is ROLLED when she is built: Hull, Sails, Speed, Turn and Hold each land anywhere from -10.00% to +10.00%, in hundredths, and are fixed for the rest of her life. They show red below zero and green above. Crew and upgrades add to her; nothing ever rewrites her rolls — which is why two ships of the same kind can trade for very different prices.
⛵
Her SAILS are her hull's base (her rung and timber, before any roll) divided by 1.6, moved by her own Sails roll. Torn sails slow her: with every sail shot away she makes 80% of her way, and in between it runs straight. Sail damage past bare yards falls on her hull, so a ship with no canvas left still sinks. Sails mend free alongside the hull, and every dock sends her out with whole canvas.
🐟
The Fishing Trawler is a working boat, off to one side of the ladder: not one gun port, but the deepest hold afloat (900 stones) and the only seine net at sea. She fishes the shoals out on the water — see Sailing for how the net works.

Upgrades

Shipyard fees, in Silver

Paid from the Shipyard's coffer. Taking a ship out puts her in your pack as an item — crew, guns and upgrades aboard — which is how a ship is traded. Salvage raises her off the seabed after a sinking; shipping the hold home is for a ship that docked at a town.

A ship can be broken up — from the Shipyard or her right-click in your pack — for 70% of the planks and ingots she cost. Only an EMPTY ship: no crew, guns, upgrades, timber or plunder aboard.

Spyglasses

A Tinkering tool, 5 ingots of one metal (at least 20 Tinkering, or the metal's own floor), and it can go in a Tool Bag. Active and raised on the helm card, it marks far-off ships and captains on the chart — a ship's own lookouts see 90 cells. It spends a charge every 30 seconds it is up, and Tracking adds up to 25% range at Grandmaster.

Her looks

Bought once with BritCoin and worn on every ship you own, from the Looks tab of the Shipyard. None of them changes a single number she sails by — and nothing animates but the cloth of her sails in the wind.
